MONROE, LA – Led by second baseman Lauren Boone who went seven for 10 at the plate for the series and first baseman Elizabeth Gibson who hit two home runs and provided the Bearkats six RBIs, Sam Houston State University took two of three from Louisiana-Monroe in a three-game Southland Conference softball series Saturday and Sunday.
Home runs by Gibson and Louisiana-Monroe’s Heather Hanson pr vided the winning runs for both teams as the Bearkats and the Indians split Saturday’s doubleheader.
Sam Houston won the first game 7-5 as Gibson hit a two-run home run in the second extra inning. Louisiana-Monroe (17-16, SLC 3-5) won the nightcap 5-2 thanks to Hanson’s grand slam home run in the fifth inning.
Tanya Hooser’s two-run double helped spark a five-run fifth inning as Sam Houston State battled from two runs down to defeat the Indians 6-2 in the third and final game of the series Sunday.
Sam Houston State (14-17, SLC 7-5) was led on the mound by Shalayne Blythe and Amanda Collier, who each pitched in two games. Blythe started the first game, but Collier got the victory in relief. Collier started the second game, taking the loss. Blythe came back Sunday to win the third contest.
The Bearkat softball team begins a seven-game home stand next Saturday, Apr. 1, with a 5 p.m. doubleheader against league leading Texas-Arlington at the new Bearcat complex.
