Sam Houston tennis drops two

The Sam Houston State University women’s tennis team dropped a pair of close matches on the road in Southland Conference play this weekend, falling to Texas-San Antonio 5-2 on Saturday and Texas State-San Marcos 4-3 Sunday.

Saturday, Irina Sotnikova and Cristina Flores provided the Bearkats their only victories, playing at number one and number five singles, respectively. Sotnikova defeated Nathalie Wallin 7-5 7-6 and Flores topped Tanya Hasking 6-2 6-1.

Sunday’s match was a thriller that saw the Bearkats take the doubles point by winning all three doubles pro sets, then stumble in singles losing at matches three through six. Sotnikova at number one and Lata Assudani at number two singles were the only singles winners for Sam Houston State.

Sotnikova defeated Christina Amo 1-6, 7-5, 6-0 while Assudani beat Ashley Ellis 6-3, 2-6, 6-2

Sam Houston State now stands 7-8 for the season and 4-4 in Southland Conference play. The Bearkats play host to McNeese State Saturday at 10 a.m. at the McAdams Tennis Center.
