SGA candidate shares thoughts

I would like to inform the student body about how important the 2006 Student Government Election will be. This is, you, the students’ time to get out and vote for people you want to represent you and your university. My name is Justin Berry and I am a candidate for the SGA presidency.

I have been involved with organizations since I came here to Sam in 2003. I have been an officer in my fraternity, Phi Delta Theta; I am also the current pledge class president for Lambda Alpha Epsilon. I am a student much like any other member of the student body I work and use financial aid to get my way through school. I can understand and relate to the stresses of everyday students.

As the President of the student body, I plan to listen to the students concerns and work with the school administrators, instead of playing the blame game, to find solutions. I am for keeping the Unfunded Organization funds (UFO’s) available for those student organizations who can not afford to put on events for the student body.

Others are trying to get rid of this valuable opportunity for organizations that need financial

assistance.

I have approved the allocation of these UFO’s for the NAACP, Relay for Life and other organizations here at Sam.

Further, I plan to keep the students updated with information and the status of key issues concerning them in a monthly report to the Houstonian. One such issue is that of the increasing costs of textbooks. I am on is the Textbook Task force headed by Vice Chancellor Cray Craft and Vice President Parker, along with several other student leaders.

We are working together with all the parties involved in college textbooks to find a way to keep the costs down. We will be attending the state legislator in the fall to address this issue.

I urge you to go out and vote on April 11th and 12th for the candidate you feel can best represent you and Sam Houston State University.

The Student Government Association will also be having its Get Out and Vote event at the HKC on April 5th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. We will be giving away prizes and raffling off six MP3 players. If you have any questions regarding the event please feel free to email me at stdjlb33@shsu.edu
