Men’s bodies found outside Amarillo

AMARILLO, Texas (AP) – Authorities on Wednesday continued to investigate the shooting deaths of two men found near each other within a group of homes along Interstate 40 west of Amarillo.

The bodies of Claude Robertson, 74, of Bushland, and Allen Hazelwood, 52, of Amarillo, were found Tuesday. Robertson’s body was found first near his home by his wife. Hazelwood’s was discovered in weeds as investigators searched an area about 40 yards from where the elder man’s body was found.

Police would not discuss a motive.

Both men had been shot in the upper body with the same type of weapon, said Lt. Gary Trupe, Potter-Randall Special Crimes Unit coordinator. No weapon was recovered.

Police believe the men were killed between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Tuesday because they had been seen by family members earlier in the day, Trupe said.

Hazelwood occasionally did odd jobs for Robertson, who rented out some of the homes near his own, Trupe said.

Trupe said there was no sign of forced entry at Robertson’s house and nothing appeared to have been taken. Evidence at the scene did not indicate that the shootings were a murder-suicide, he said.
