Museum wins brochure design awards

Sam Houston State University’s Sam Houston Memorial Museum recently won three awards for brochures in the Texas Association of Museums Mitchell A. Wilder Publication Design Awards competition.

The awards included a “Silver Certificate” for their new “Program and Activities Guide,” a “Silver Certificate” for their new “Rack Card,” and a “Merit Citation” for their new “Guide to the Museum Grounds.”

All three were designed by Wayne Ford, an SHSU alum who owns Wayne Ford Design in Houston.

This year’s Wilder design competition had 217 entries from museums of all sizes, regions and disciplines throughout the state. Submitted materials included posters, brochures, newsletters and invitations to Web sites and videos.

The Sam Houston Memorial Museum complex is adjacent to the academic campus of Sam Houston State University. It includes four historic buildings including General Houston’s Woodland Home, a gift shop, an exhibits hall, the Memorial Museum, and an Education Center, as well as an 18-acre park.

Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday noon to 4:30 p.m. The museum recently dedicated a renovated exhibits area that took six years to complete at a cost of $1.2 million.

A highlight of museum activities each year is the General Sam Houston Folk Festival, which is upcoming April 21-23.
