Sam Houston basketball signs two

HUNTSVILLE — Klein High School product Lindsey LeDee of Temple Junior College and Whitney Smith of Hightower High School have signed letters of intent to attend Sam Houston State University and play women’s basketball for head coach Wooly Hatchell.

Both are 5-10 forwards. LeDee earned first team All-North Texas Junior College Conference honors in 2006 after averaging 10.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. Smith was an All-District 20-5A first team selection who averaged 15.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game as a senior this year.

“Both are terrific young ladies who will be great additions to our program both on and off the court,” Hatchell said. “Whitney brings an athletic style of play — attacking the basket and rebounding — that will be a great fit with the players in our program. I recruited Lindsey in high school and am excited to have the chance to get her. She brings experience and a slashing style of play that we believe can help us immediately.”

The two signings complete Sam Houston State’s women’s basketball recruiting for 2006. Sam Houston State signed Alexis Green of Dallas / Skyline, Taujhnae Travis of Humble, and Brittany Brooks of Spring during the early signing period in November.

Green is a 5-8 guard/small forward. A teammate of current Bearkat freshman Ratysha Alexander a year ago, Green is a two time All-State selection who earned District “Most Valuable Player” honors.

Travis is a 5-8 point guard who was a teammate of current SHSU sophomore Britney Harris. She received preseason All-Greater Houston first team honors and was District 22-AAAAA “Defensive Player of the Year” a year ago.

Brooks is a 5-5 guard who averaged 12.1 points.
