With plenty of activities cramming the Student Services Calendar every day, it’s nearly impossible to sit on campus with nothing to do.
The Lowman Student Center Ball Room was transformed into a glittering casino Wednesday night as students enjoyed good company, good food and good games at Casino Night. The event, hosted by the SHSU Program Council, featured free casino games and prizes for participants at the popular annual event.
“We have slot machines, black jack, pretty much everything you’d find in a casino,” Scott Bruegger of Student Activities said. “For prizes, we give away stuff like t-shirts and maybe an i-Pod.”
The event progressed much like a high school Operation Graduation with students earning chips to turn in for raffle tickets. At the end of the night, a drawing was held to determine the prizewinners.
Council members plan to host an Outdoor Movie and a Dinner 8 p.m. on Friday at the Quad as the final event of the month. During the movie, students will be able to enjoy hot dogs and hamburgers free of charge.
“We normally do a drive-in movie but this year you’ll be able to sit on the grass at the quad,” Concerts and Entertainment Director, Hannah Monroe said.
The kick-off for the Fall Concert Series, featuring the Ryan Bales Band and Full Throttle, will be held 7:30 p.m. on September 5th at the Old Main Pit. The series brings four concerts to campus throughout the semester, alternating between country and alternative genres.
For students looking for a little relief from academic stress, Program Council will present a Comedy Club at 7 p.m. on September 6th featuring “Last Comic Standing” comedian Tess Drake. For the event, the LSC Ballroom will be decorated like a comedy club, complete with a lounge and a mini-bar.
“We’re going to have hors d’oeuvres and a mini-bar, with mocktails of course,” Educational Chair Kayla Comeaux said. “The comedian we have coming was on Last Comic Standing and BET.”
Several events hosted by Program Council occur regularly throughout the year, such as a Tailgate Carnival before every home football game.
The first Monday of every month, called “Happy Birthday Bearkats”, is set aside for celebrating students’ birthdays during that month.
“We sit out in the mall area with stuff like cake and punch to celebrate students birthdays,” Comeaux said.
