SHREVEPORT, LA — Stefani Robbs forced overtime with just over two minutes to play, then scored the game-winner three and a half minutes into the first overtime as Centenary handed Sam Houston State a 3-2 non-conference women’s road soccer loss Sunday afternoon.
The Bearkats, who won their season opener Friday night 1-0 in overtime against Mississippi State in Huntsville, appeared on the verge of picking up their second victory in a row.
Raquel Bueno put Sam Houston ahead 2-1 with 29 minutes to play with a right-footed shot into the lower left hand corner of the net off a pass from Yoanna Garcia. The goal came just over a minute after Monica Madden had tied the contest 1-1 on a shot from 17 yards away. Bueno assisted on the first Bearkat goal.
Centenary scored the only goal of the first half as Bre Fletcher headed in a cross from Robbs in the 39th minute.
Goalkeeper Melissa Sauceda posted nine saves as Centenary took 20 shots.
Sam Houston State returns to Huntsville for a home match with nationally ranked SMU Thursday at 7 p.m. at Pritchett Field.
Yoanna Garcia headed in a goal from eight yards out off a corner kick from Raquel Bueno in the 11th minute of overtime to give Sam Houston State a 1-0 victory over Mississippi State in the season opener for both teams.
Bearkat goalkeeper Melissa Sauceda saved nine of the Bulldogs’ 27 shots including a diving save on a point blank shot by Treena Ferguson in the ninth minute of overtime.
Sam Houston State (1-0) is beginning its fourth season in NCAA Division I.
