FRISCO, Texas — Sam Houston State University quarterback Wade Pate has been named as Southland Conference Offensive “Player of the Week” after leading the Bearkats to a 41-3 victory over Arkansas-Monticello in the Kats’ season opener at Bowers Stadium.
The junior from Arp completed 22-of-30 passes for 259 yards and three touchdowns.
Pate left the game in the middle of third quarter after building a 20-3 lead. His touchdown passes were for 19, 20, and 23 yards.
McNeese State’s Bryan Smith tied a school record with five quarterback sacks on Saturday to earn the Southland Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week honor. McNeese’s Steven Whitehead used a punt return for a touchdown to pick up the special teams’ honor. Following is a look at their performances.
