HUNTSVILLE — Freshman Brittany Brooks and junior Britney Harris each scored 19 points for Sam Houston as the Bearkat women’s basketball started their 2006-07 season with a 90-84 exhibition loss to Houston Baptist Thursday night at Johnson Coliseum.
Jasmine Irving led the Huskies with 23 points as HBU built a 50-31 halftime lead and were ahead by 20 points twice early in the second period.
But the Bearkats created 31 points off Houston Baptist turnover, coming back in the second stanza to cut the Huskey margin to just four points twice. Sam Houston trailed 71-69 with 6:10 to go after two foul shots by Morgan Collom and 73-69 with 5:46 to play after a pair of free throws by Harris.
Valencia Kuykendall sparked a 12-2 run in the next three minutes to put the game out of reach but the Bearkats made a statement with the comeback.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the way we fought back in the second half,” new SHSU women’s head coach Brenda Welch-Nichols said.
