Kats take down Wiley in turnover-fest, 97-76

Britney Harris scored 22 points and three other Bearkats scored in double figures as Sam Houston State scored 60 points in the second half to blast Wiley College 97-76 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Johnson Coliseum.

The Bearkats struggled in the first half against a feisty Wildcat squad, leading only by two points 37-35 and seeing the lead change hands nine times. The contest was marred by 65 total turnovers (40 for Wiley, 25 for SHSU) and 52 personal fouls (26 for each team).

But, in the second half, Sam Houston hit 20 of 36 from the field (55.6 per cent).

Sam Houston State now stands 3-2, the first time since 1995 that the Bearkat women’s basketball team has won three of its opening five games. Wiley, located in Marshall and a member of the NAIA Red River Conference, is now 2-3.

“We played more of a team game in the second half,” SHSU head coach Brenda Welch-Nichols said. “In the first half, we couldn’t get into a groove. It looked like we were still eating turkey. But the second half was our desert. “
