Sam Houston runners open track and field season at LSU

BATON ROUGE (SID) — The Sam Houston State University men and women’s track and field teams began their 2007 indoor season Saturday at the LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge, LA., with an outstanding performance that included 19 top 10 women’s individual finishes and 17 men’s top 10 placings.

Tiffany Singleton won the 400 meter run with a time of 57.20. Kendall Bass won the shot put (44′ 3.5″). Jennie Sewell was the top finisher in the pole vault with a mark of 12′ 11.5″. Whitney Rister was the runner-up in the 800 meter run (2:27.76). Natalia Clark placed second in the women’s weight throw (55′ 5.0″).

After red-shirting in 2006, Sewell opened her final collegiate season by tying her indoor best which also is an NCAA provisional qualifying standard.

Michael Courtney won the men’s 400 meters (49.83). Chris Edison (50.31) and Lane Dennis (50.55) were 3rd and 4th in the event, respectively.

Kevin Houston was the runner-up in the 200 meters (22.50) and Morten Munkholm was third in the 3000 meters (8:29.54). The Bearkats 4×400 relay team of Courtney, Edison, Dennis, and John Thomas finished behind only LSU with a mark of 3:22.60.
