Bearkat pole vaulter earns SLC ‘Athlete of the Week’

HUNTSVILLE — Jennie Sewell, Sam Houston State University senior pole vaulter from Rockwall, has been named Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Women’s “Athlete of the Week” for the first week of the 2007 season.

In her first intercollegiate meet in a year at the LSU Purple Tiger Indoor Classic Jan. 13, Sewell was the top collegiate finisher in the pole vault with a mark of 12′ 11.5″. Her mark tied the Sam Houston State indoor school record she set in 2005 and also was an NCAA provisional qualifying standard.

Sewell redshirted during the 2006 indoor and outdoor seasons. She is a five-time Southland Conference pole vault champion, winning indoors three times and outdoors twice.

She was an NCAA national meet paritipant in 2004, placing 15th at the NCAAs.

She also owns the Sam Houston State school outdoor pole vault record with a mark of 13′ 7.25″.
