Bearkats earn first victory of the season at New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, NM (SID) — A solo home run by Stephanie Mosley in the third inning and a run-scoring single by Amanda Lindsey in the fifth combined to give Sam Houston State University its first softball victory of the 2007 season as the Bearkats defeated New Mexico State in the second round of the Aggie Invitational Friday.

Huntsville freshman Morgan Mikulin pitched her first college complete game to earn the victory, spreading five hits over seven innings and striking out two Aggie batters.

Mosely, who went two for four in the contest, homered with two outs in the top of the third inning. Lauren Burns led off the fifth inning with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on Lindsey’s single to center field.

New Mexico State rallied in the bottom of the fifth as Kenrda Randall singled to score Leslie Luttmers who had reached second base on an error.

The Bearkats picked up two quick outs to end the inning and retired three batters in a row in the sixth. In the final, Luttmer reached first on an error but the next three Aggies grounded out to the Bearkat infield to end the contest.

Sam Houston State’s next opponent in the tournament will be North Texas Saturday morning.
