Kats defeated on the road by U. Houston, fall to 1-3

HOUSTON (SID) – Matt Fry and Bobby Verbick each had a pair of RBIs as Sam Houston State University jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the third inning before the Houston Cougars came back to win 16-9 in a non-conference game Tuesday night at Cougar Field.

Houston scored five runs three consecutive innings to take a 15-7 lead in the bottom of the fifth as the Cougars produced 17 hits. Ryan Lormand went four-for-four at the plate to lead Houston.

Each team utilized six pitchers in a contest which took three hours and 50 minutes to complete. Jon Lindenberger pitched two scoreless innings, but gave up the first three runs in the five-run third inning. Zac Baker drew the loss in relief, giving up six runs in one and a third innings.

Tim Gray, Tanner Rainwater, Will Goodwin, and Stephen Price closed out thecontest for the Bearkats.

Todd Sebek started the scoring for Sam Houston with a triple in the second inning. Sebek scored on an error by the right fielder. Austin Boggs, Verbick and Fry all had run-scoring singles in the five run third inning for the Bearkats. Karl Krailo added an RBI single in the fourth and Fry picked up his second RBI with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Sam Houston State falls to 1-3 for the season while Houston moved up to 2-2 for the year with the victory.

The Bearkats will play host to Army Friday and Saturday at Don Sanders Stadium. Friday’s single game begins at 6:30 p.m. Saturday’s doubleheader will start at 2 p.m. Saturday is “Military Appreciation Day” at Sanders Stadium.
