Bearkats suffer narrow home defeat to Texas State

HUNTSVILLE (SID) – Ashley Leffingwell scored 18 points and Erica Putman added 17 points and nine rebounds to lead Texas State-San Marcos to a 79-71 Southland Conference women’s basketball victory over Sam Houston State at Johnson Coliseum Saturday afternoon.

Sam Houston State (5-22, SLC 2-12) led by two points, 66-64 with 5:01 to play after a layup by Ratyasha Alexander. But the Bobcats outscored the Bearkats 15-5 in the final five minutes. The loss eliminated Sam Houston State from contention for the O’Reilly Auto Parts Southland Conference post-season tournament in Houston.

Texas State-San Marcos (18-10, SLC 11-4) led by 10 points at halftime, 41-31, but Sam Houston fought back to tie the game seven times in the second period. Brooke DeGrate put the Bobcats ahead to stay, 67-66, on a free throw with 3:51 to play.

Alexander led Sam Houston with 15 points. Erica Parker scored 12, Alexis Green 11, and Adah Wells 12.
