Saturday @ Sam program to recruit new students

The time for prospective students to preview the campus is here once again. Predominantly known as ‘Saturday @ Sam,’ students who are interested in attending SHSU can come to survey the campus and prepare for the upcoming semester.

This Saturday, March 24, from 8 am to 2:30 pm, students, parents and guests will be roaming the campus to get an idea of what Bearkat life is all about.

“We have over 1,500 students signed up,” said Shannon Stuckley. “We’ve seen the steady growth of the Saturday @ Sam program in the past few years.”

While Stuckley said that not all 1,500 registered students will come, many students will travel to campus and register when they get there.

With coffee and other amenities offered to parents upon arrival, Saturday @ Sam is going to the next level to make parents feel welcome at SHSU.

“We do have some students who come on their own, but a lot of parents also come and visit,” Stuckley said. “This is a great time for students (and parents) to see the campus.”

In addition to previewing the campus, students will have the opportunity to be academically advised by counselors at the Sam Center as well as speaking with professors in their chosen field of study.

“This will be an academic open house where representative from various departments will be available to answer any questions that the students might have,” Stuckley said.

Along with getting a degree plan, students will also be able to visit an organizations fair hosted by The Office of Student Activities. Representatives from different organizations will be available to distribute information and promotional items.

With the size of Saturday @ Sam continually growing, the need for volunteers is crucial. Volunteers will be given various jobs such as: giving and assisting with campus directions, welcoming the guests as well as helping with check-in.

“We will be having two informational meetings this week for volunteers,” Stuckley said. “The one on Tuesday will begin at 12:30 p.m. and the one on Wednesday will begin at 5:00 p.m., both will be in the auditorium of the visitor center.”

Stuckley says that those who volunteer will receive a volunteer gift as well as receive breakfast and lunch, donated from various businesses in the community.

While prospective students will not be able to register on Saturday, students will be allowed to decide their degree plan and contemplate classes they would like to take for next semester.

Advanced registration for Summer and Fall will be done by classification. Honor students will begin to register on Friday, March 23. Doctoral, Grad, Post Bac and seniors will be able to register on Monday and Tuesday of next week, March 26-27.
