In one of their final competitions before the conference tournament in April, the Sam Houston State men’s golf team proved their strength with a third place finish at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock First Tee Classic at the Chenal Country Club on Tuesday.

Led by senior Robert Gwin, who earned runner-up in the individual competition and honorable mention this week for Southland Conference men’s “Golfer of the Week,” the Bearkats accumulated an 857 team total to take third place behind second place Middle Tennessee (848) and first place Lamar University (832).

The Cardinals’ Justin Harding earned first in the individual competition for his second straight individual title. For his performance, Harding was named SLC men’s “Golf of the Week” title, bringing the honor back to Lamar for the third consecutive week..

Sam Houston State competed against 17 other teams in the tournament and was able to finish ahead of three other Southland Conference schools, including Texas-San Antonio (5th, 864), Stephen F. Austin (15th, 901) and Central Arkansas (17th, 905).

In addition to the second place finish by Gwin, the Bearkats’ Brandon Frankhouser and Beau Willis also had strong showings in the individual competition with 13th and 17th finishes, respectively.

The third place finish at the event marks the seventh time this season that the Bearkats have earned a spot among the top three in a tournament.
