(SID) – Led by freshman Beau Willis, who shot a final round two-over 73 to jump from 14th to eighth place in the final individual standings, the Sam Houston State University men’s golf team finished third at the Wichita State Shocker Classic Tuesday afternoon.
Texas-Arlington, led by individual medalist champion Bobby Massa, won the team title with a 54-hole team score of 891. Oklahoma City University finished two strokes back at 893 and the Bearkats were four strokes behind with a 895 team total.
Other individual finishes for the Bearkats were Fergal Rafferty 26th (225), Robert Gwin and Scooter Jefferson 26th (226), and Brandon Frankhouser 48th (234). A total of 16 teams competed in the event.
The finish marks the eighth time in 10 events during the 2006-07 season that the Bearkat men’s golf team has finished among the top three in an intercollegiate tournament.
The Classic is one of just two tournaments remaining for the Bearkats before the annual Southland Conference men’s golf tournament, which is set to be held April 16-18 at the Comanche Trace Golf Club in Kerrville.
