Sam Houston State ties for first with Lamar at Texas State CenturyTel Bobcat Classic

In their final tournament before heading to the conference championship, the Sam Houston State University women’s golf team finished in good fashion by tying with Lamar for first place at the Texas State Bobcat Classic.

The Bearkats opened the tournament on Monday with a three-stroke lead over the Cardinals. Yet Lamar accumulated a 293 score on Tuesday to regain ground and tie with Sam Houston State with a final score of 903.

Sophomore Stefanie Page led the team with a 219 performance, including a par 72 finish in the final round of the tournament for her fifth top-10 finish of the year.

The Cardinal’s Linda Persson shot a 2-under par 70 in the final round to tie Page for first place, and later won a tie breaker with Page to take the top individual medalist honors.

For her performance, Perssons was named the SLC women’s “Golfer of the Week”.

Other top finishers for the Bearkats included Marianna Villareal (228), Kate Hathway (232), and Jennifer Heinz (232).

The Cardinals have won both of their last two tournaments, including the CenturyTel Bobcat Classic.

The Southland Conference tournament marks the next stop for the Bearkats, who hope to reclaim the conference title they won in 2004 and relinquished to Lamar in 2005. The Cardinals currently hold the most team conference titles in the SLC with 3, including wins in 2003, 2005 and 2006.

This year, the SLC Championship Tournament will be held April 9-11 at the Applerock Golf Course in Marble Falls.
