Series sweep extends win streak to five

The Sam Houston State University softball team is officially on a roll with a five game winning streak after pouncing the Southeastern Louisiana State Lions in a double header this past Saturday and in the following game on Sunday.

In the second game of the series, Sam Houston State (19-17, 8-4 SLC) dominated offensively with three homeruns, effectively shutting out the Lions for a 7-0 victory.

Casey Everitt hit a solo homerun over the left field wall in the first inning to put the Bearkats on the board. After a hit from Stephanie Mosley, which brought in Amy Brown, Mandy Collier blasted a homerun to score two more runs for the Bearkats. In the fifth inning, Lauren Burns nailed a three-run homer to continue the streak.

Freshman Amanda Lindsey hit her first career homerun in the third inning of the Game 3 to help propel the Bearkats to a 1-0 early lead over the Lions.

In the seventh inning, with one man on, Lions’ left field Brooke Lockhart hit a powerful double to right center, but a quick play by Mosley in the outfield got the ball to catcher Casey Everitt, who was able to make the tag at the plate and prevent the Lions from scoring.

In the opening game of the series, the Bearkats pulled together to take a 1-0 victory. With two outs in the second inning, Burns singled down the left field line to score teammate Tonya Hooser.

The Bearkats’ first two wins came earlier in the week with a double-header on Thursday against the Prairie View A&M Panthers. The Bearkats won both games with a score of 10-0.

This week, the team will take a highly earned break before resuming play on Friday in a two-game conference series at Central Arkansas. The first game is set for 3 p.m. on Friday with Game 2 beginning at noon on Saturday.

Sam Houston State currently sits in second place in the SLC behind the University of Texas-Arlington Mavericks (23-11, 11-4 SLC).
