Bearkats in fifth after first round of conference tourney

After the dust cleared from the first round, the Sam Houston State men’s golf team found themselves in a tie for fifth place with Texas State with nationally ranked Lamar in the lead by six strokes.

With two ties in the standings, including a tie for second between Texas- San Antonio and Southeastern Louisiana, the chips have fallen much as predicted in the 44th annual tournament in Kerrville at the Comanche Trace Golf Club.

Fergal Rafferty holds 18th place in the individual standings and leads the Bearkats after shooting four-over par in the first round.

The freshman from Carrickmore, Northern Ireland shot a 76 for the team lead, followed by a 77 by Robert Gwin and 78 by Brandon Frankhouser.

As a team, Lamar shot four-under par 284 on the 54-hole course for the lead as the Cardinals pursue their second consecutive conference championship and their fifth in the last seven seasons.

This season, the Sam Houston State University men’s team won five regular season tournaments for the first time since 1988 and hope to finish in the top six in the conference tournament for the first time since 2000.
