For the second time this season, Jon Lindenburger took the mound and gave the Rice Owls a bit of a scare.
In the Bearkats’ second meeting with the No. 3 Owls on Tuesday night, Lindenburger held the Rice offense to just two runs on three hits in five innings. Yet a four-run rally led by a triple from Rice left fielder Jared Gayhart in the seventh inning proved to be the deciding factor as the Bearkats lost to the Owls 6-2 at Reckling Park.
The Bearkat offense built up a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth as Austin Boggs led off with a double and scored on a single from Todd Sebek and an error by Rice pitcher Chris Kelley.
Heath Pugh followed with another single to score Sebek for the Sam Houston State lead.
The Owls put their first run on the board in the bottom of the fifth and tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth with an unearned run after a throwing error from Bearkat pitcher Casey Springer.
With the loss, the Bearkats drop to 0-2 against Rice this season and 27-16 on the season.
