Finding a future

“Start small, think big.”

These are some of the words that echoed through LSC room 320 yesterday as Tyron Coleman lectured to a group of new students about becoming successful students and finding jobs after college.

Coleman’s lecture was part of The Ultimate Roa trip: Campus2Career, a free “dynamic, interactive” program hosted by First Year Experience, Career Services and Student Activities to help students start off on the right college track.

“The Ultimate Road trip is designed to help give college students some key tools they can use their beginning years to help set them up for greatness once they leave college,” Coleman said.

The program included an interactive workbook for students to complete during the lecture. The workbook included tips for making the Dean’s List, time management, getting experience, stress and money management and statistics.

One of the tips included setting goals that are “specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time bound.”

Coleman also gave advice on studying, which the workbook called “the 3W’s.” These suggestions included keeping in mind where to study, when to study and who to study with. Coleman said students should find quiet places to study when they are most production and warns of “group therapy sessions”.

Coleman said to keep these tips in mind because at the end of the process, “you have to fill out a scorecard,” or a resume.

As well as providing tips for students, the program also offered statistics such as the percentage of students who change their major – 60 – and the percentage of students getting a job after college relating to their field of study – 50.

The Ultimate Road trip program sends speakers to colleges across the country. The program yesterday had two sessions and was considered extra credit for several classes.
