Sam Houston’s Career Services hosted the annual Career Expo Kick-Off party yesterday in the LSC Mall Area. The Kick-Off marks the beginning of the annual Career Expo, a larger and more formal event.
The Expo, hosted in the Bernard Johnson Coliseum, will have around 100 employers for students to forge contacts and distribute resumes. Career Services hosts the event annually as a tool to aid students in acquiring jobs and internships before and after graduation.
“It’s helpful for trying to find a future job. It’s an opportunity to see all the jobs out there, talking to people from different companies” R.C. Fairchild, junior, said.
Although the event was scheduled to last until 2 pm, a Texas-sized cloudburst ended the festivities almost an hour early.
Typically the Kick-Off occurs the day before the Expo, but this year it was moved up a few weeks to give participants more time to prepare.
“We’re having it earlier so we could really help students with getting their resume and interviews ready” said Vinessa Mundorff, Employment Specialist with Career Services.
The event featured give-aways, free hot dogs, music, and helpful pamphlets about upcoming events, resumes, and other related items. Students were able to submit their names to a drawing for larger prizes, to be held next week. T-shirts, given out every hour on the hour, were a popular draw for many.
“They definitely enjoyed getting the Career Services’ shirts. It was good for recruiters and students to have brief talks in a relaxed setting” Mundorff said.
Participant turnout this year helped make the Kick-Off a success. Sammy the Bearkat even made an appearance, mugging for pictures and spreading school spirit.
The Career Expo will be in the Bernard Johnson Coliseum on September 19, from 10 am to 3 pm. For more information, visit http://www.shsu.edu/careerservices.
