Bearkats end non-conference play with second victory over Texas-Pan American, prepare for conference opener Friday

After honoring their coach with a plaque commemorating her 500th win Wednesday night, the Sam Houston State volleyball team closed out non-conference play with a victory over the University of Texas-Pan American for the second time this season.

The Bearkats used the Broncos to earn their fifth win of the year, taking the match in three sets 30-10 15-30 30-16 30-26.

The Bearkats took the court and caught the Broncos off guard in the first set, quickly running away with the game thanks to excellent front row play and outside attacks from senior outside hitter Cynthia Yarotsky and sophomore middle blocker Katie Phillips.

In the second set, the Texas-Pan American team found their groove and shut down the Bearkats to take the 15-30 victory and tie the match at 1-1.

The third set found a rejuvenated Sam Houston State team as the Bearkats pulled into their regular form, coming away with the match 30-16 to take the 2-1 lead.

The Bearkats finally sealed the deal in nail-biting fashion in the fourth set, going point-for-point with the Broncos before finally pulling through for the 30-26 victory to take the match.

The Bearkats previously defeated Texas-Pan American in their season opener at home on August 31. It took five sets for Sam Houston State to come away with that match, defeating the Broncos 30-24 31-33 23-30 30-24 15-12.

Yarotsky led the Bearkats in kills with 21 on the night, followed by Launa McClung with 11, and Lizzy Stuller with 10. Junior Megan McNamara led the team in assists with 45. Yarotsky also took top dig honors for the Bearkats with 20, followed by Megan Kuehler with 13.

Yarotsky currently leads the Bearkats in kills for the season with 123, while McNamara leads the team in assists with 314.

With the win, Sam Houston State improves to 5-6 on the season, including a 2-2 record at home.

After completing their non-conference schedule, the Bearkats are set to open Southland Conference play this Friday in a match-up with Central Arkansas at Johnson Coliseum at 7 p.m.
