After claiming victory in their first two conference games of the season, the Sam Houston State volleyball team picked up its first conference loss of the year at home Friday against Texas-A&M-Corpus Christi in four sets.
Entering the match, the Bearkats (9-7, 3-1 SLC) were one of five undefeated teams in the Southland Conference while the Islanders 4-12, 1-3 SLC) were searching for their first conference win of the season.
Yet the visiting team came prepared Friday as the Bearkats dropped the game to the Islanders in four sets, 28-30 30-27 27-30 20-30.
Katie Phillips and Brittanie Wallace led the Bearkats in kills with 14 each, Megan McNamara led in assists with 44, and Cynthia Yarotsky led in digs with 21.
Saturday provided an opportunity for redemption and the Bearkats capitalized, defeating Texas-San Antonio in five sets, 30-26 25-30 30-26 23-30 15-11.
Yarotsky took top kill honors for Sam Houston State with 17, McNamara again led the team in assists with 26, and Megan Kuehler led in digs with 16.
With the loss to the Islanders, Sam Houston State drops to 3-1 in conference play, good for third place in the SLC-West behind Texas-Arlington (10-6, 3-0 SLC) and Stephen F. Austin (14-5, 4-0 SLC).
Lamar leads the SLC-East with a 4-0 conference record, followed by Nicholls State at 2-1 in conference play.
The match with UTSA capped off a five-game home stand in which the Bearkats picked up four wins and one loss.
The Bearkats are scheduled to play their next conference match tomorrow at Texas State at 7 p.m. The team will be on the road for the next two games and will return to action at home on Friday, Oct. 12 against SFA at 7 p.m.
The Bobcats currently trail Sam Houston State in the SLC-West in fourth place with a 2-1 conference record, 9-6 overall.
