A special Grassroots presentation – part of the Grassroots series sponsored by the SAM Center – will be held on Friday, Oct. 5 in the Olsen Auditorium.
The speaker, Dora G. Alcala, is a member of the Board of Regents.
“Alcala was appointed to her position by the governor, so she has direct input into the university system of which Sam Houston State University is a member,” said Dr. Bernice Strauss of the SAM Center. “Having someone of that impact available to converse with students is a real compliment to the student body. I’m absolutely amazed we could make this happen.”
Strauss said Alcala would discuss several important issues relating to student and personal success.
“The things she’ll talk about will include her own background and suggestions for students to make their own contributions and impressions,” Strauss said. “There will also be a 6 p.m. reception after the presentation during which students will have a chance to visit with Alcala.”
The Grassroots series, which has existed for about four years, brings minority leaders from all over the state to address students, Strauss said.
“The speakers in this series talk about challenges, success and their perspectives on leadership,” she said. “We’ve had university presidents, community leaders, activists and all kinds of other people committed to making a difference.”
“Students generally find it exciting, insightful and informative, and it’s also a great networking opportunity.”
The Grassroots presentations are typically held on a Wednesday near the middle of the month, Struass said.
The next presentation will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 24.
“This Friday’s presentation is a special Grassroots because of the opportunity to host a member of the Board of Regents,” Strauss said. “We’d be delighted to have the students there.”
