Career Services to offer Teacher Job Fair Wednesday

Ever dreamed of having over 80 potential employers available right at your doorstep?

For those graduating seniors interested in teaching positions, that dream will come true on Wednesday.

An on-campus job fair, organized by Career Services, will feature representatives from over 80 schools in Texas this week. The job fair will be looking for candidates for teaching positions in various grade levels.

The event will be held 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Wednesday in the Johnson Coliseum.

“This is an excellent opportunity to meet over 80 employers all under one roof,” said Christa Ashworth-Perkins, Career Services event coordinator.

Students who plan to graduate in December will be encouraged to interview for jobs.

Other Seniors, Ashworth-Perkins said, will have the opportunity to network with the professionals in attendence.

For over 20 years, schools have flocked to SHSU’s teacher fair to hire teachers, counselors, band instructors and administration personnel according to Director of Career Services Pam Laughlin. Some Region Education Service Centers, including the Region VI Center in Huntsville, will also be looking for graduates with a background in education.

“Schools are especially looking for teachers in critical needs areas, such as math and sciences, bilingual and special education, and fourth and fifth grade teachers,” Laughlin said. In the critical needs areas, some school districts might consider hiring teachers who are not yet certified, Laughlin said.

Area schools that will be represented at the fair include Huntsville, Trinity, Houston, Willis, Conroe, Spring, Pasadena, Bryan and College Station Independent School Districts.

Students who attend the event will also receive free copies of “Job Search Handbook for Educators” and will also be eligible to receive door prizes.

According to Ashworth-Perkins, requirements for the job fair will be along the same lines as the requirements for any other professional interview.

“Dress professionally, bring copies of your resume and be prepared to interview,” she said.
