Making riffs in music scene

For Jordan Volz, the idea of starting a band was simply that – an idea. It wasn’t until he enrolled at Sam Houston State University that he was able to put that idea into action.

“It’s something I’ve wanted to do since I was a freshman in high school, but I never had anyone to be in a band with,” Volz said.

Today, Volz and fellow bandmates Travis Weaver, Taylor Volz and Luke Burnett are making riffs in the Huntsville music scene with their band, The Last Great Assault.

Since forming in 2005, the band has played numerous venues including the Vans Warped Tour, and they will be performing tonight at 10 p.m. at The Stardust Room.

“The whole idea is to try to build a scene here in Huntsville,” Jordan said. “A lot of the bands we play with from different areas like Houston always say that they would love to play down here but there isn’t anywhere to play. We want to change that and show there is a music scene.”

However, the band is not only looking to make Huntsville a touring hot spot. The men of Last Great Assault have also focused their attention on the war in Iraq.

“We’re not suggesting that we’re for or against the war,” Jordan said, “We just want to raise awareness and have people to be educated about it.”

Taylor Volz, Jordan Volz’s brother, joined the Marines infantry after high school and was deployed to Iraq.

“He lead the assault on the city of Falluja,” Jordan Volz said. “It was a landmark in American history. That’s where we got our name ‘the last great assault.'”

For now, the band is planning a tour that will take place from Dec. 26 – Jan. 12, 2008.

“It will start in far south Texas and go all along the west border to Dallas to New Orleans and hopefully we’ll play Austin on New Years Eve,” Volz said. “I’m really looking forward to Dallas because there are a lot of kids there that are obsessed with music.”

The band has even made the radio waves of 94.5 The Buzz.

“I never had the opportunity to hear it because I’m so busy,” Jordan Volz said. “As long as it’s on the radio, I don’t care if I hear it or not.”

Though the band has been receiving positive feedback, the band still cannot believe the success they have stumbled upon.

“I never thought that we would be doing all this,” Jordan said. “I still think this entire thing is almost a joke. We are no different from anyone else but, for some reason, we have all these opportunities.”
