The Student Government Association put a new spin on an old tradition recently when it created a trophy similar to the pair of colts used in the 1970s to symbolize the “Battle of the Piney Woods” rivalry against Stephen F. Austin University.
“You have all these generations of Bearkats and Lumberjacks that have fought throughout the years,” SGA President Christopher Whitaker said. “The trophy symbolizes that tradition.”
According to Whitaker, the old trophy – which featured a pair of colt walker pistols – was exchanged between SFA and Sam Houston State University at every game in the 70s.
After several years participating in the “Piney Woods Shoot-out,” as it was once called, Whitaker said the trophy was lost; SGA and alumni members decided to create a new one.
Whitaker said SFA’s Student Government Associate funded one half of the trophy, while SGA, Phi Delta Fraternity and various alumni members funded SHSU’s half.
“I am very excited to have something tangible to represent the ‘Battle of the Piney Woods’,” SFA’s Student Government Association President Kent Willis said.
The 82nd Battle of the Piney Woods will take place on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. at SFA University.
Student Activities will charter a bus for students and alumni for $5. The package includes a t-shirt and food.
Whitaker said that due to violence in the past, both schools will provide security.
The Lambda Alpha Epsilon (LAE) Criminal Justice fraternity will offer a SWAAT service.
“It’s very exciting, very intense,” Whitaker said. “It’s just something about that game that you have to experience. It’s part of being a Bearkat.”
