In their 61st consecutive Southland Conference victory, the Ladyjacks powered over the Sam Houston State Bearkats in Nacogdoches on Tuesday to claim the win in three sets, 24-30 22-30 21-30.
The Bearkats were coming off of a two-game win streak in which they defeated Southeastern Louisiana and Northwestern State to improve to 5-4 in conference play. But the undefeated Ladyjacks proved to be too much to handle as Stephen F. Austin retained their place atop the SLC standings with the victory over the Bearkats.
In the first set, the Bearkats jumped ahead to a 6-2 lead before allowing the Ladyjacks to tie the score at 8-8. After coming back for another 10-10 tie, Sam Houston State fell behind but continued to play the Ladyjacks point-for-point, tying the game again at 18-18.
Yet the Bearkats fell behind in a 27-20 hole they couldn’t climb out of as the Ladyjacks took the 24-30 lead.
After the defeat in the first set, the Bearkats never fully recovered.
The Ladyjacks claimed an early 10-5 lead, which they retained throughout the match. Sam Houston State nearly put the game within reach after scoring six unanswered points and putting the score at 18-15.
However, the comeback wasn’t enough with the Ladyjacks riding a high from the first set to a 22-30 victory in the second match.
The third set belonged to the Ladyjacks from the beginning, as SFA pounced on the Bearkats for a 10-6 lead before claiming the game with a 21-30 victory.
Cynthia Yarotsky led the Bearkats with 15 kills, while Megan Kuehler took top dig honors with 18.
Megan McNamara led the team in assists with 17.
The Sam Houston State team will play their next game at home this Friday against the Lamar Cardinals, who currently lead the SLC-East with a 9-1 conference record, 18-8 overall.
