Men’s golf closes fall season with fourth place finish at UTSA

KERRVILLE — Fergal Rafferty shot a 54-hole score of 71-69–67–207 to lead the Sam Houston State men’s golf team as the Bearkats finished fourth in the University of Texas-San Antonio Invitational at Commanche Trace Golf Club.

Saint John’s won the tournament team title on the par 72, 7,103-yard course with a 54-hole score of 844. SMU was the team runner-up with a score of 847, followed by Oklahoma Christian at 864 and the Bearkats in fourth place with an 870 total.

Sam Houston finished ahead of five Southland Conference schools with Texas-San Antonio and Texas State-San Marcos tying for fifth with identical 876 scores, Central Arkansas placing seventh at 881, Stephen F. Austin 11th (900), and McNeese State 14th (932).

Rafferty finished fifth in the individual medalist competition with his nine-under 71-69-67–207 total. Brent Long of Western Kentucky won the individual championship with a tournament record 16-under score of 69-68-63–200.

Other Sam Houston State golf scores and standings were Brandon Frankhouser 19th (75-71-72–218); Chris Carson 31st (74-72-76–222); Benjamin Smith 36th (74-76-74–224), John Hurley 40th (76-75-74–225), and Scott Kelly 48th (77-75-77–229).
