Bowl turkeys and help provide homes for local pets at the same time.
Huntsville Lanes will host its second annual bowling tournament benefiting the Rita. B Huff animal shelter Saturday afternoon from 12 to 3 p.m.
The twenty-five dollar entry fee includes three games and shoe rentals, and each team of four will receive one pizza. Participants can also purchase raffle tickets for various prizes, including a large “mystery” prize, for one dollar each or six tickets for five dollars.
“We hope to raise as much money as we can to help build a new shelter,” said Bob Ernest, director of the shelter. The current shelter, built in 1986, “is in sad shape,” Ernest said.
The animal shelter takes in about 5,000 stray or unwanted cats and dogs every year, and finds homes for about 1,000 of them. Owners can also bring their pets to the shelter to be spayed or neutered.
“We do everything we can to make sure there are no pets without a home,” Ernest said.
SHSU students also play a part in keeping pets cared for.
“Students from Sam come in groups to play with the pets, they helped us out with our recent dog walking event, and I hope they’ll come to this tournament,” Ernest said.
