Sam Houston firefighters honored

Ray Martin saw something most people overlook.

With a significant number of volunteer firefighters coming from Sam Houston State, the Student Government Association Senator saw a need to honor these students, faculty and staff with a day of their own.

So he established “Sam Houston State University Volunteer Firefighter’s Day” to satisfy this need.

Martin developed the idea after becoming inspired by a discussion with the Fire Chief of Huntsville.

“We were discussing the manpower they have,” Martin said. “The Fire Chief said the department only has eight full-time firefighters in Huntsville. He said they rely heavily on volunteers and a majority of those come from Sam students, faculty and staff.”

With the help of the City of Huntsville, the University and SGA, a bill was passed early this month proclaiming Wednesday, Nov. 28 as Volunteer Fire Fighter’s Day – the purpose of which to “recognize the contribution of those people who volunteer their time and safety to keep Huntsville safe.”

“We had to do something,” Martin said. “They work their behinds off.”
