22-year-old student dies in car accident during Thanksgiving break

Junior Derek Wooten, 22, died Nov. 21 from injuries suffered after a vehicle struck his Mitsubishi Montero during Thanksgiving break outside of Longview.

According to News-Journal.com, Wooten’s passenger, 23-year-old Jarvin Mitchell, was in fair condition after the accident.

His mother, Patty Wooten, said Derek would have been a senior in three weeks.

“You never know when something like this will happen,” Patty Wooten said in the article. “Derek would agree He loved his friends and family. We were so proud of him.”

The article reported that she was not angry at the other driver, however.

“I’m not blaming anyone,” Wooten said. “God does what he does in his time. We don’t understand it, but we know Derek is in heaven.”
