Women’s basketball suffers sixth loss with 84-51 collapse to Texas Tech

After claiming their first win of the season on Saturday, the Sam Houston State women’s basketball team fell back into the losing column after dropping a road game to undefeated Texas Tech 84-51 on Tuesday night.

The hosting Red Raiders (8-0) jumped ahead to an early 14-8 lead before the Bearkats (1-6) tied the score at 28-28 and pulled ahead with the lead on a free-throw from sophomore guard Brittany Brooks.

The Bearkats carried the lead until the final seconds of the first period when the Red Raiders’ Stanecia Grahm sank a lay-up to end the half with Texas Tech ahead 38-37.

The Red Raiders never looked back after the intermission, powering forward for a 60-44 lead before claiming the 81-54 victory over the Bearkats in Lubbock.

Lydia Gonzales led the Bearkats in scoring with 12 points, followed by Deltrice Daniel with 10 and Whitney Smith with 9. Gonzales also led in rebounds with 10, followed by Smith with 7 and LaToya Bennett with 6.

Grahm claimed top scoring honors for the Red Raiders with 19 points, followed by Keisha Walker with 18.

With the loss, Sam Houston State falls to 1-6 on the season with their only victory coming on the road against Western Illinois. The 1-6 start marks the worst beginning since the Bearkats went 0-11 in the 2003-2004 season.

The Bearkatks are scheduled to play their next game this Sunday against the University of Texas in Austin.
