Welcome to 2008, Bearkats!

Dear Bearkat Nation,Ah, the New Year: New classes, new friends, new opportunities and new resolutions that we’ll break in two weeks. I hope everyone had a nice restful break, lots of home cooking and a few nice things that were left under the tree. The year 2008 is going to be a good year for the Bearkat Nation. Buildings keep going up, our student body keeps growing and we keep dominating in all areas of college life.Speaking of dominating, have you been watching the basketball team? The Bearkats are off to their best start in decades (13-2) and are at the top of the Mid-Major Poll. If you’re not excited about the team this year, then you may need your pulse checked. Our next home game is going to be Jan. 24th against our arch rival: Stephen F. Austin. (To be fair, the Lumberjacks have been doing pretty good, beating Oklahoma University IN Norman). The Piney Woods series is currently tied 89-89. That’s right, I said tied. This game also has MAJOR implications for the race for Southland dominance. To say that you should really make it a point to go this game and support your team would be an understatement in the strongest terms. As I’m sure you might have heard, 2008 is an election year. If you aren’t registered to vote, stop what you’re doing right now and go register. The issues facing this nation are way too important for you to be sitting on the bench. In the coming months, lots of people are going to be telling you how to vote. Don’t listen to them. Take a look at the issues, take a look at the candidates and think for yourselves. Think about the direction this nation is headed and make your own choice on the direction you’d like to see it go. You have no excuse not to vote. The issues facing this nation today impact you. The economy impacts you. The war impacts you. The recession of Constitutional rights impacts you. The issues impact you. If you’re not registered to vote, stop what you’re doing and go.In the meantime, good luck with your classes and here’s to a great 2008!Best Wishes,Christopher WhitakerStudent Body President
