Aspiring musician connects with band

A new sound will be heard at Lizards tomorrow night. The Western Civilization, a Houston-based band, will be performing after a chance meeting with the Cashions.Dr. Ty Cashion, Associate Professor of History at SHSU, decided to take his son to see some bands. His son Sam, a musician himself, plays the violin, guitar and sings. Dr. Cashion hoped to introduce his Sam to a variety of music.”I wanted him to see that not all bands are like Rolling Stone,” Cashion said. The Western Civilization, an Indie/Pop band, consists of five members and has performed across the South and Midwest at multiple college venues. Their debut album, Letters of Resignation, made The Houston Chronicle’s Top 10 albums from local artists in 2007.When The Western Civilization played at a show in Rice Village, Dr. Cashion took Sam and a couple of friends to the show.”After that, [Sam] was hooked,” Cashion said. “As a dad with an aspiring musician, I can’t think of anyone else that I’d want [Sam] to be like than these musicians.” The Cashions had seen The Western Civilization perform nearly ten times since the first show, and it became obvious that the band was extraordinary on stage and off. “I think they have gotten better every time we’ve seen them,” Dr. Cashion said. Sam and The Western Civilization corresponded regularly through MySpace and soon he and his dad were invited to visit the band’s studio. While Dr. Cashion read a book on the front porch, Sam spoke with the band about a variety of things.”They talked to him as a fellow musician, not as a kid,” Dr. Cashion said. Dr. Cashion then decided to take The Western Civilization’s CD to Ed de la Garza, the owner of Lizards. After hearing the music, de la Garza wanted to book the band. As fate would have it, all of the arrangements were made and the band will perform tomorrow night. The show will begin at 8 p.m. and admission will be $3. Also performing at Lizards will be Hollywood Black, who will open for The Western Civilization. For more information on The Western Civilization or to listen to a few on their tracks, visit their Web site at http://www.myspace.com/thewesterncivilization.
