Bearkats fall behind SFA with OT loss at Texas State

They climbed their way to the SLC-West lead on Wednesday, but by Saturday night it was lost. With a 96-93 overtime loss to the Texas State Bobcats (11-10, 4-4 SLC) Saturday in San Marcos, the Sam Houston State men’s basketball team (16-4, 4-3 SLC) falls back into second place in the division, a half-game behind Stephen F. Austin. The loss, their third road loss and second in overtime, dropped them to below .500 on the road since conference play began.Senior forward Ryan Bright led the team in scoring with 16 points and rebounds with 11, notching his eleventh double-double of the season.Guard Reggie Rawlins once again came off the bench and gave a spark to the Bearkats offense, scoring 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting, while center Domas Kvedys had a season-high 13 points, including the basket to send the game into overtime.Yet the Bearkats’ offensive effort wasn’t enough as the Bobcats’ Brett Benson had a career game, shooting 8-of-10 from the field including a perfect 6-of-6 from the behind the three-point line. His 24 points were a career high for the junior guard from Georgia. In overtime, the deficit the Bearkats faced was as high as six points, aided in part by a pair of three-pointers by Benson. The game was within three points with less than 30 seconds to go, but the Bearkats were unable to answer a missed shot by Dylan Moseley and a pair of free throws by Ryan White effectively ended any hope of a comeback. The Bearkats look to get back to .500 on the road this Wednesday with their upcoming game against the University of Texas at San Antonio. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
