A nationally-recognized festival will be taking place on campus this week from Feb. 26 through March 1. During The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, eight productions will be presented as they compete for national recognition.The festival, which will draw in over 600 theater students and professionals from five different states, will be hosted by Sam Houston State University for the first time. In addition to SHSU performing their rendition of “Quake,” an original piece will be presented by Scott McCarrey, a senior theater major, called “Robot Songs” in the staged readings workshop. Another 11 students from SHSU will compete in the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship auditions. A few of the productions that will be shown this week will include “Katrina’s Path” by the University of New Orleans, “Buried Child” by New Mexico’s Clovis Community College and “Home” by Texas Southern University.Participants of the festival will be given priority, but a half hour before each production will be an “open house” which will allow the general public to buy tickets. These tickets will be sold for $10 each show or $8 with an SHSU or senior citizen ID.The festival will offer workshops, staged readings from original student works and regional level-award programs.To attend the festival, register on the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 26 in the UTC lobby.
