Fraternities compete in individual sports, childhood games

Ten fraternities across the Sam Houston State University campus will be competing against each other for trophies and bragging rights.

Greek Games, sponsored by The 19 St. Band, will be held at The Jolly Fox on Thursday, March 20. The event is open to the general public for includes individual sports and childhood games such as arm wrestling, thumb wrestling and rock-paper-scissors.

“We wanted an event that would promote Greek life,” Billy Sheeley, vocalist for The 19 St. Band said. “[Also,] an event that would bring the fraternities together.”

The idea for Greek Games originated from a member of The 19 St. Band. All of the members of the band are also members of two separate fraternities.

“I had been wanting to do this since I got into college,” Zakk Shanks, drummer of The 19 St. Band said. “I took it upon myself and made it happen.”

The event, which brought in 200 people last year, was held at Fatboy’s but this year, it has been moved to The Jolly Fox to accommodate the crowd.

Greek Games begins at 8:00 p.m. and will feature custom arm and thumb wrestling tables and trophies will be awarded to the top fraternities in each competition.

“When it comes time to Rush, [prospective members] can see they competed against other fraternities and that they won something,” Shanks said.

The doors open at 6:00 p.m. for a pre-party and the entire public will be admitted at no charge until 8:00 p.m. Girls will be admitted at no charge until 1 p.m. and then a small cover fee will be charged.
