Bearkats drop two of three against McNeese State

The visiting Cowgirls from McNeese State University claimed two out of three games against the Bearkats this past Tuesday and Wednesday at Bearkat Softball Stadium.

In game one of the Bearkats’ doubleheader on Tuesday, the Cowgirls jumped out in the first inning when Jenny Clay hit a double and was driven in by Michelle LaVoie to take the lead, 1-0. In the bottom of the inning with Amy Brown and Hailey Wiginton on first and second, Morgan Mikulin pulled through with an RBI-single to center field to score Brown. Casie Everitt then hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring in the second run of the inning. After Mikulin grounded out to end game one, the Bearkats were defeated 3-2.

In game two, the Bearkats struggled to get their bats going. In the top of the third, McNeese’s Clay hit a deep line drive over the left field fence for a two-run homerun to push the Cowgirls to a 3-0 lead. Krystal Gay hit a double to give the Bearkats their first hit of the game. With runners at the corners, Wiginton hit a single to score Gay in what would be the Bearkats only run of the game as the Sam Houston State lost once again 3-1.

Following the pattern in the previous two games, the Cowgirls wasted no time scoring in game three on Wednesday. In the top of the second with the bases loaded, three batters in the Cowgirls lineup hit three separate singles that scored three runs, giving McNeese State a 4-0 lead.

With a sacrifice bunt by Wiginton, the Bearkats found themselves in a scoring situation with only one out. Alex Survant then served up a three-run homerun to tie the game. Mikulin then hit a solo homerun to help the Bearkats win 5-4.

The Bearkats play at home against UT-Arlington on Saturday at 1 p.m.
