Honors Symposium to give students the edge

Students will be able to practice research presentations on Friday, April 25 in the Lee Drain Building from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. The Undergraduate Research Symposium, sponsored by the Elliot T. Bowers Honors Ambassadors, will serve as a way for students to experience presenting material that they and a faculty member have researched.

Any Sam Houston State University student can participate in the event, as long as they’ve been working with a faculty member on their research. Any kind of research conducted in the past year is suitable to present at the event. There will be no fee to participate in or attend the event.

“Students normally don’t get a chance to practice presenting their research, so we’re giving them a free opportunity to do so,” Nicole Lozano, coordinator for the event, said.

There are currently 28 spots available for oral presentations and an unlimited amount of space for the open poster session.

The symposium will also feature an open poster session in which students can present their information on a poster in the atrium of LDB.

“This event stems from the honors program and is mainly a way for students to present their research via presentation or through an open poster session,” Lozano said.

There will be several sessions throughout the day. During each session, a professor will view and critique the presentation.

This will be the first annual research symposium offered at SHSU. The Honors Ambassadors will serve a light breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack for all who register to attend.

Those interested in presenting at the symposium must register by 5 pm on April 11. No late registrations will be accepted. For more information, contact the event coordinator Nicole Lozano at SHSUSymposium@gmail.com or (936) 294-1477.
