This semester, singers and songwriters of Huntsville are showcasing their talents during a newly relocated Open Mic. The Stardust Room currently hosts Open Mic every Tuesday night from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m.
“It’s a brand new spot,” Tim Qualls, co-host of Open Mic, said. “Lots of people don’t know about the underground music scene in Huntsville.”
Formerly held at Lizard’s, Open Mic features many of Huntsville’s performers throughout a wide range of genres and categories. Performers may include anyone from poets to rappers.
Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the wide array of performances. Whether you like unique guitar solos or poetry, a performance is bound to catch the attention of your eyes and ears.
Regulars that perform during Open Mic are Brad Basker, co-host Adam Rogers and The 19 St. Band.
Although there is no cover for Open Mic, members of the audience can enjoy the new drink specials that will be offered at The Stardust Room, called Texas Tuesdays.
“We definitely have a tip jar,” Qualls said. “If people really like [the performers], they can tip.”
In addition to the venue change, the participants of Open Mic wanted to create a new tradition. For good luck, the performers can simply stand beneath the doorway which separates the bar area from the stage area and reach above. “There’s a piece of wood to rub before each musician performs.”
Participants must sign up through Qualls, who then creates a play list. All performers must bring their own instrument and amp if needed and The Stardust Room will provide necessary cords.
