Fall Getaway, Enchanted Rock sign-ups open

In an effort to help students remember that college is more than just books and classes, the Sam Houston Outdoor Recreation program is sponsoring two upcoming outdoor adventures: the Fall Gulf Getaway from Sept. 19-21 and the Enchanted Rock Yoga and Climbing trip from Oct. 10-12.

Each trip is filled with activities designed to give participants a greater appreciation for nature as well as an opportunity for self-discovery. Activities planned for the Fall Gulf Getaway, to be held at Galveston Island State Park, include deep sea fishing, surfing and sea kayaking as well as fun around the campfire at night. “Everyone will participate in the cooking,” says Steve Thompson, coordinator of the two trips.

The trip to Enchanted Rock State Park has just as many diverse activities. Yoga and climbing are only a few things planned, as participants can also look forward to hiking and maybe even a little spelunking through a few of the Park’s caves.

Both trips are designed to open students up to a world sometimes forgotten in the monotony of day-to-day college life. Though Thompson says that the goal of both the trips is primarily to get people outside, he also is quick to point out that the outdoors bring with it more than just fresh air.

“College is all about learning new things and that doesn’t come just from books,” he says. “It’s all about learning and discovery.”

The cost of the Fall Gulf Getaway is $45 for students and $50 for staff and faculty. The Enchanted Rock trip costs $40 for all interested participants. For both trips the cost is all-inclusive, covering transportation, food and lodging.

Sign-ups for the Fall Gulf Getaway have already begun, but those interested in the Enchanted Rock Trip can sign-up beginning Sept. 2nd. More information can be obtained by calling the Outdoor Recreation department at 936-294-3656 or via email at outdoors@shsu.edu.
