Career Services hosts Career Expo kick-off party

A resume, an interview, and a suit?

To a lot of people, these are the words of a nightmare. For others this is an upcoming reality as graduation draws closer and closer. This is why Sam Houston State University Career Services will be holding a kickoff party for Resume Rescue and Career Expo 2008 this Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the LSC mall area.

Come one, come all!

Career Services’ kickoff party will inform anybody and everybody anticipating their big career start of the upcoming Resume Rescue and Career Expo 2008. It offers an opportunity to practice interview skills and a chance to better prepare for their future.

There will be free food, music and a drawing held after the kickoff for a ton of donated prizes from sponsors.

“It’s free to the students sponsored by Career Services. Prizes have been donated by different sponsors from the community and some different companies coming to the Career Expo,” Christa Ashworth-Perkins, staff assistant of Career Services, said. “The kickoff will have recruiters present, but they will not be interviewing at this time.”

You can register to win at the kickoff, and will be notified by a phone call to pick up your gift when most convenient.

Only a few days after the kickoff party, Career Services will be hosting Resume Rescue on Monday, Sept. 15th.

“Resume Rescue will be a booth set up in the LSC mall area with information about resume packets and how to put resumes together, but it also allows students who already have a resume prepared and just want a quick look to come up and have us critique it on the spot,” Rachel Phelps, career services counselor, said.

Exactly one week after the kickoff party on Sept. 17th, Career Services will also be hosting the Expo 2008 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Bernard Johnson Coliseum

The Expo 2008 is an all major career fair held once a year in Sept. that offers students the chance to meet over 80 companies and graduate schools, with the possibility of full time positions and internships.

“We will have students from the College of Business, Criminal Justice, and really all the different graduating seniors, experts, and company employers. They will have their recruiters on hand to meet with the students. Some will interview on sight and some at a later date,” Ashworth-Perkins said. All majors are welcome, but come dressed to impress.

“Students should dress professionally because they are representing not only themselves but Sam Houston State University as well,” Vinessa Mundorf, career services employment specialist said

So check out the kick off and bring your resume copies to the rescue workers because Expo 2008 is coming soon.
