Resume rehab

Sam Houston State University’s Career Services will be hosting a “Resume Rescue Booth” next Monday, Sept. 15th in the LSC mall area. The “Resume Rescue” will start at 10 a.m. and last until 2 p.m, and is to help students prepare for future job and career interviews.

“Resume Rescue” will have a booth set up to answer any questions students may have about resume packets, or how to put a resume together. If a participant already has a resume made and available, he/she can also bring it for a reviewing.

“It also allows students who already have a resume prepared and just want a quick look to come up and have two of us critique it on the spot,” Rachel Phelps career services counselor said.

Rachel Phelps and Vinessa Mundorf, employment specialist, will be reviewing the resumes along with their graduate assistant, Emily Childress.

Students are encouraged to bring a copy of their printed resume to the booth.

“The best thing to do is to already have a template from our online site or resume packet, so they can have a general idea of how to put the information together, so that we’re kind of critiquing the information already provided,” Phelps said.

The template is a suggestion, not a requirement, but may offer more assistance to the student.

“This is certainly not a requirement, and we are certainly excited and glad to help, but this could be more helpful,” Phelps said.

If one is unable to attend “Resume Rescue” this upcoming Monday, there are other ways of seeking the Career Service’s assistance.

According to Phelps, there are three methods students can use to have their resumes critiqued.

“You can email your resume in, and we will take a look and type suggestions, or you can drop it off and we will call you. The best method for more guidance will be if you can come in and meet us,” Phelps said.

The Career Services Center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

“Walk-ins are welcome, but sometimes it is good to make an appointment,” Phelps said.

Following Resume Rescue, Career Services will also be hosting Career Expo 2008 on Wednesday, Sept. 17th from 10 a.m to 3 p.m at the Bernard Johnson Coliseum.

Over 80 companies and graduate schools will be offering information, full-time positions and internships.

Students are expected to dress professionally and bring resume copies.
