The Student Government Association will be holding a candle light vigil today at 8 p.m. in the LSC mall area, in memory of the lives lost and affected by the tragic events of the September 11th attacks in 2001.
The President of SGA, Mike Perkins, is scheduled to speak about the events of September 11th.
According to SGA Vice President, Christopher Yancy, the president will be honoring the forgotten heroes and the overall theme that SHSU will never forget those who are fighting now and who also helped afterwards.
According to Student Affairs Chief, Jenny Zehentner of SGA, the ROTC will present the colors. Then there will be nine candles lit in honor of the victims.
“Four for the planes that crashed, two for the Twin Towers, one for the Pentagon, one for the soldiers fighting, and one for those who lost loved ones,” Zehentner said.
The lighting of the candles will then be followed by a moment of silence.
It will be the first candlelight vigil held by SGA in memory of 9/11, and is expected to last approximately between 20 and 30 minutes.
SGA is planning more events such as a 40th Anniversary Memorial to John A. Patrick, the first African American man admitted to Sam Houston State in the summer of 1964, as well as a mock presidential debate.
According to the Vice President, students may get involved by attending the 6 p.m. meetings on Tuesdays, or just by stopping by and talking to anyone in the Student Government office in the LSC.
“You don’t have to be a member. If you come to a meeting, you will be recognized as an observer. You don’t have to speak, but you can address the assembly on behalf of an organization if you have a concern or issue,” Yancy said.
“We are not here to shoot down an idea, complaint, or suggestion or be condescending. We welcome it,” he said.
