Sammy, we’re not in Texas anymore

After being off for more than three weeks, the Sam Houston State Bearkats fell to the Kansas Jayhawks 38-14, a member of the Big XII conference.

With Hurricane Ike bearing down on Southeast Texas, the Kats put up a good fight in Lawrence. But in the end, it was not enough to beat the Jayhawks who are rank 19th in the BCS rankings.

Rhett Bomar passed for 340 yards but was outdone by Jayhawks quarterback Todd Reesing, who had 356 yards passing and two touchdowns. Bomar threw for a touchdown and added another with his legs, but threw three costly interceptions.

After a scoreless first quarter, Kansas picked off a Bomar pass on the Bearkats 15 and ran 14-yards to the Bearkat’s one-yard line. On the next play, Reesing scored on a one-yard rush.

The Kats had a great opportunity on the next possession, but the second interception of the game put the Jayhawks at their own 34-yard line. Reesing then added another touchdown on a 68-yard pass to Kerry Meier.

The Kats stopped a 4th-and-inches attempt by Kansas at their own 36, and scored on an 8-yard quarterback draw by Bomar.

Kansas scored another touchdown before the end of the half when Reesing made a highlight reel play, avoiding multiple tackles and throwing a 57-yard touchdown pass to Dezmon Briscoe. It was the second 3rd and long play that the Jayhawks converted into a touchdown.

It took Kansas five plays to get on the board again to start the second half with a two-yard rushing touchdown by Jocques Crawford.

The Kats answered right back with a Bomar 33-yard completion to James Aston that set up a Justin Wells 46-yard touchdown catch. That capped off a four play, 44 second drive.

The Jayhawks would go on to add a 24-yard field goal. Bomar threw his third interception at the end of the third quarter that helped set up Kansas’ last touchdown that ended in the fourth quarter on a 16-play, 79-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run by Angus Quigley.

SHSU was held to 45 yards rushing after gaining 261 yards in their victory over East Central Oklahoma.

Bomar finished with 340 yards passing and a touchdown, while also rushing for one. Wells finished with eight catches for 111 yards.

Sam Houston takes on Gardner Webb in Conway, Arkansas, on Saturday, Sept. 27th, who are 2-1. SHSU is now 1-1 on the season after the game against Prairie View A&M was canceled because of hurricane Ike.
